Batman Returns (SNES) Retro Review feat. Dario

With Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's The Batman finally swooping into theatres this weekend, we figured it was time to dust off one of the classic Batman videogames from a bygone era.

There were so many games to choose from, but the heavily stylized, relatively well-received nature of Batman: Begins made this one a great option.

But just because it was thought of as one of the better licensed games on the Super Nintendo at the time doesn't mean it'll hold up in 2022. With the likes of games such as Arkham Asylum and Arkham Knight gracing our consoles in recent years, is there any room for a generic beat-em-up dressed in a cape and a cowl?

Before getting to the gameplay we sit down with our friend Dario (@Brains4BRKFST) to take some time to give our first impressions on Elden Ring, and talk about our favourite Batman properties of all time!

Wario's Woods (SNES) Retro Review

What did Wario ever do to YOU? This week we dig into the legacy of the evil doppleganger of the acrobatic plumber we know as Mario with a look back at Wario's Woods! It originally released in 1994 on NES and the Super Nintendo, but we also dig into an oft-forgotten console add-on called the Stellaview by St. Giga! Before setting off to spend some time in the woods, we talk about some famous video game antagonists which we'd like to see in other games, Mikey updates us on his hunt for an Xbox Series X and his time with Halo: Infinite, and we even question the morality of the Mushroom Kingdom!

Jackass: The Video Game (PS2) Retro Review

Hi, we're The Retrograde Podcast, and Welcome to Jackass!

It's almost impossible to find someone born before the year 2000 who doesn't know what Jackass is, and yet for some reason no one seems to remember that they released a video game in 2007 (in between Jackass 2 and Jackass 3) called Jackass: The Game!

This week on the podcast we set out to find out why it was forgotten, and figure out whether it's worth digging back up!

Surprisingly, it was voiced by much of the regular cast (Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Preston Lacy, Chris Pontius, etc.) and even included some of their mo-cap!

But before breaking our bones on this game, we break down some of our best memories from the series that brought us gems such as The Cup Test, The Toro Totter, and the Poo Cocktail.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus - First 60 Minutes Playthrough

This is a big week for the Pokemaniac in all of us with the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. It might be the biggest swing Game Freak and Nintendo have taken in the realm of Pokemon RPGs, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to explore how far this franchise has come!

We're taking a bit of a step away from the usual structure to offer full commentary while we play through the first 60 minutes of this game!

It's the first Pokemon RPG Mikey has played since Diamond and Pearl, and Andrew's most recent experience was with Pokemon Snap. Have we moved past Pokemon video games in general, or is this our chance to rekindle our old flame?

Snowboard Kids (N64) Retro Review

Grab your boards and hit the slopes with us as we carve our way through Snowboard Kids on the N64!

Way back in 1998, cart racers reigned supreme, but few franchises took such an interesting leap by borrowing the formula and repurposing it on the slopes!

It's a lesser known game, but an absolute cult classic which has been requested several times by our listeners. But just because it's remembered well doesn't mean it still PLAYS well.

Before flashing our lift tickets, we do a deep dive on Microsoft's recent acquisition of Blizzard/Activision, plus we get updates on Andrew's progress with Horizon: Zero Dawn (just in time for the release of Horizon: Forbidden West), and explore Mikey's new obsession with Station 11.

Joe & Mac / Caveman Ninja (Sega Genesis)

This week we rewind the clock about 100 million years to battle dinosaurs and save Cavewomen in Joe and Mac on the Sega Genesis! You may also recognize this game as the insanely titled Caveman Ninja.

It's a game which set itself apart from the likes of Contra, Streets of Rage, and all the explosions and violence of the typical 90's beat-em-up, but has that change made the game any more playable 30 years later?

Before throwing some arrow heads, rolling a few stone wheels, and slaying a T-rex we take a moment to catch up on The Book of Boba Fett, explore the world of VR in Arizona Sunshine, and reveal some of our New Years Gaming Resolutions!

Super Mario Kart (Super Nintendo) Retrospective

This week on the podcast it's Super Maro Kart: the game that NOT ONLY started a brand new genre, but busted open the trend of placing traditional gaming mascots TOGETHER in a non-platformer!

It's a massive game to focus on, but we wanted to show it some love due to the fact that it was an ominous no-show on IGN's recent list of their Top 100 Games of All Time. Plus, with the recent rumours around Mario Kart 9 / Nintendo Kart, the timing couldn't be better!

But before we start hucking bananas at each other, we take some time to discuss Andrew's playthrough of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mikey's terrifying hunt of the haunted in Phasmophobia, and our favourite Kart games of all time!

Plus: we understand why small Victorian children are so popular as ghostly representations... but what about LARGE Victorian children?
